Hazelwood Strategic Housing Plan

In 2019, M&L worked as a subcontractor to Fourth Economy to prepare a strategic housing plan for the Hazelwood Initiative/Greater Hazelwood Community Collaborative. Hazelwood is strategically located near downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland and is also the home of the former Jones & Laughlin steel factory, which is in the process of being redeveloped as Hazelwood Green. Based on community input, M&L developed implementable strategies aimed at addressing the identified affordable housing gap within the community. This included detailed plans for encouraging new residential homeownership opportunities, support for existing homeowners, expanded affordable rental housing opportunities and strategies to limit speculation and displacement of residents. Proposed projects implemented as of June 2021 include the former Gladstone School rehabilitation/conversion to 55 units of affordable, general occupancy rental units.
